I’ve often said that Duke wouldn’t be Duke without Durham. Our location in this thriving city is one of our greatest assets—Durham boasts one of the largest concentrations of PhDs and MDs in the world, and it is home to hundreds of innovative global companies who benefit from a rich reciprocal relationship with Duke and our other renowned local research universities.

This innovation ecosystem is truly first-in-class, building strength upon strength and offering opportunities for collaboration between industry, higher education, and the public sector. It has supported Duke’s growth as a global university and world-renowned health system—and helped us to launch dozens of start-ups with our partners in the region. And with our extraordinary regional talent base, it’s no coincidence that the vast majority of the companies that are born here stay here.

It’s easy to understand why so many want to move here, too. Durham is consistently rated one of the nation’s best places to live, recognizing our world-class cultural offerings, our rapidly growing economy, our vibrant food scene, our easy access to North Carolina’s beaches and mountains, and our many local recreational opportunities—my dogs are partial to Duke Forest!

Perhaps most importantly, we in Durham believe that the benefits of economic growth should reach all of our neighbors. For ours is a city that is both fiercely proud and exceptionally welcoming and inclusive. We would be thrilled to welcome you here, too.

Cheers,
Vince
